Leather is a natural product. The rough-hewn leather used on our furniture is created by selecting hides that may showcase branding marks, insect bites, healed scars, and other naturally occurring traits. Leather furniture is designed for durability. You need to make sure you know what type of leather you own to know how to properly take care of it, but in general vacuuming the dust or giving it a light wipe with a damp (water) cloth tends to be all that is required. Major spills – you may want to seek professional help depending on the style and type of leather that you have.

The simplest ways to clean your leather are vacuuming the dust or giving it a light wipe with a damp (water) cloth. For severe cases or if questionable, there are ready made kits available. This depends on the type of leather furniture you have. If you have a waxed, burnished leather, there are some creams available where you apply lightly and polish it in to hide the scratch. More finished leathers are a little more complicated and we recommend seeking professional help to ensure your leather is taken care of properly.

All skins on animals are different and absorption is different, just like human skin. Aniline leathers do not have much finish on them, so there isn’t much room to hide and disguise the color variations that comes from the piece of leather.

The hide stretches over the animal in different ways and all depends where it is cut from on the hide. If it is cut from the belly, it tends to be a little looser and have a little more open structure. Cutting from the hind quarters tends to have tighter grain. This is a prime example of leather being a natural product and shows its natural beauty throughout the hide.

The reason leather fades is because the top coat or base color becomes eroded through use. Fading can be caused by lotions, hair products, and medication used by people who sit in the furniture. The best preventative measure is to simply clean the leather with distilled water and a soft white cloth. Do not soak the leather, just wipe it with a damp cloth and then immediately dry it. There’s no need to use a conditioner.
